Mull Week Club Trip Report – June 2024

Waves Shape

Our club trip this year was to the Isle of Mull, the second largest Island of the Inner Hebrides. Mull has always been a popular dive destination for the club, as it never lets us down – excellent dive sites, superb walks, amazing accommodation with its own pier, and spectacular scenery and wildlife.

14 of us made the long journey this year, with some having to make hurried alternative ferry plans to get on the island as the A38 closed at Glencoe mid Saturday afternoon due to a fatal road accident. With one couple stuck on the mainland overnight, we were all at the pier on Sunday morning to load dive gear onto the Brendan and head off for the first dive of the week.

During the week we dived the following walls and wrecks: Auliston Wall; The Breda; The Shuna; The Thesis; Calve Island Wall and The Hispania, with some sites dived more than once due to the weather conditions. For the first time I am aware of in all the club trips to Mull, a day’s diving was cancelled due to a North-Westerly storm blowing straight down the Sound of Mull – very unusual for this time of the year – making the water too choppy with a strong surface current. This became a day for walks, shopping in Tobermory, and kit washing (it was the last day before departure).

As this was a self-catering holiday, we took it in turns to do the cooking in pairs, and every night was a culinary delight! Friday night was Fish and chip night in Tobermory.

Whilst on the trip Ollie completed his Sports Diver qualification and Danna did her 40m depth progression. Congrats to both!

Finally, big thanks to Colin for organising the trip. We look forward to the next one!
